Sustainability at our events

Food procurement (purchasing and transport)

We buy in bulk to save on plastic waste such as packaging. Seasonality and regionality of products are a priority for us.

Venue

The events take place in a nearby community. The residents can therefore reach the venue on foot and are not dependent on other means of transport.

Swap (plastic for meal)

No additional packaging is required for the swap (plastic for food), as participants either bring their own dishes or containers. In this way, we are moving towards a "zero waste policy" at our events. The exception to this is, of course, the waste we save at our events.

Sensitisation

Another important concern for us is the educational part of our events, where we focus on educating especially the children in the communities about how to deal with plastic (pollution). We show them videos and drawings and get into conversation with them.

Workers:inside

All our staff, volunteers and active members go through a training programme that provides an introduction to the most pressing environmental issues as well as an in-depth knowledge of plastics and re-& upcycling.

Fair working conditions are a matter of course for us. We make sure that each and every worker is fairly paid, insured and has reasonable working hours. In addition, they benefit from English courses, the acquisition of a driving licence and the use of the company car.

Our plastic manufactory

In our first plastic factory in El Astillero, Nicaragua, upcycling is a top priority. We want to avoid downcycling and produce items that can be recycled again and used multifunctionally. When developing the products, we take care to use as few resources and harmful materials as necessary. The same applies to the packaging of the final product.

If circumstances allow, we try to establish a local distribution system for the sale of our upcycled products. However,in the spirit of economic sustainability, we alsodistribute the products in small quantities in Switzerland.

Our first product, produced in our plastic factory in Nicaragua, El Astillero, is a surf comb that can roughen and scrape the wax off the surfboard. It also serves as a bottle opener.

Check out our surf comb now and see how it was produced in the video.

Surfkamm

Rs. 25.00

"At Buy Food with Plastic , we do everything we can to follow the 5 R's: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot."

.

The 5 R's

We are doing everything we can to empower locals to avoid and reduce their use of single-use plastic.

Raising awareness of how to deal with plastic is an essential aspect for us.

The disposable bottles we collect at our events are reused. We do this through upcycling. If local conditions do not allow for upcycling, we ensure that the bottles are recycled.

Our focus

.

Sustainable Development Goal 1

By distributing food at our regular events, creating jobs and a circular economy where our local team turns plastic waste into plastic flakes and new products
that can be reintegrated into the economic cycle through sales, we are tackling the problem of poverty.

.

Sustainable Development Goal 12

By creating jobs with fair wages, raising awareness of the plastic problem among local people, and actively recycling and upcycling plastic waste, we are tackling the root of the problem and addressing Sustainability Goal 12.

Impact reports

Transparency is a major concern for us. Therefore, all impact figures, receipts, and other important information of the events are recorded in a Impact Report .
