Tola Region Nicaragua - truck project

We have given 5,000 people and 8 communities access to recycling:
+ El Astillero
+ San Martin
+ Popoyo
+ Las Salinas
+ La Virgen Morena
+ El Huigeral
+ San Ignacio
+ El Limon

In just a few weeks, we have brought plastic bottle pollution under control for around 5,000 people through our impact truck project. We can collect and recycle around 95% of the bottles. Lids and rings become new products and PET bottles are sold in Managua.

There are three stakeholder groups:

Group 1: Sell their bottles to us. They receive CHF 0.05 per pound (our beneficiaries have an average daily budget of CHF 0.65). We sell the bottles without lids and rings for CHF 0.13 to the Compañía Recicladora GER Nicaragua, which compacts the bottles and sells them on the international market (mainly Honduras and the USA) to produce new PET bottles.

With the difference of CHF 0.08 we try to cover the costs of the driver and diesel. At present, the impact truck project is not yet self-supporting. The aim is to be able to cover the costs by September 2024.

Group 2: People donate their bottles and are happy that they don't have to burn them or throw them into nature.

Group 3: Restaurants, hotels and other companies can take out memberships with us so that we can collect their plastic bottles.

This truck measure will enable us to get the plastic bottle pollution problem under control and give the population in the rural areas of Nicaragua access to the plastic market, thereby improving their income.

FAQ

What is the motivation behind the campaign?

We want to make a difference for families who really need it. We want to reach as many people as possible to familiarize them with the plastic problem and show them solutions. With the total amount of CHF 7.8 million, we can increase our impact on three continents by providing regular food to local people and addressing the problem of hunger, plastic and unemployment on a larger scale. In one year, we can provide more than 500,000 meals to people in Ghana, India and Nicaragua and recycle up to 20 million plastic bottles by using them as currency for food. By distributing food and collecting plastic bottles in return, we can create jobs for local people in need while raising awareness of the plastic problem among large numbers of people.

How can you see the impact of your donation?

Transparency is the key! With our impact reports and budget overview, you can see exactly what impact your donation has. After implementing the donations, we post regular social media updates where you can see how your contribution is being used. So if you're not following us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn yet, now's the time. If you have any further questions about the amount you donated, you can always contact us by phone or email!

What happens if we don't reach our fundraising goal?

If we raise only part of the financial target, we will have to adjust the impact. We will make sure that all three countries will benefit in a comparable way from the money raised. But for now: let's target the big impact! 😊

How did Buy Food with Plastic get started?

Buy Food with Plastic was created in response to the ecological and political situation we experienced in Nicaragua in the summer of 2018. Large quantities of plastic were lying around along the coast. In addition, the political crisis escalated and had serious consequences for the local population. Tourism almost disappeared and many hotels and restaurants had to close. The locals lost their jobs and families struggled to feed their children. We quickly realized that these problems also exist in other countries around the world. We decided not to look away and took action.

Why Nicaragua, Ghana and India?

We do not want to bring the Buy Food with Plastic concept to countries where it is not wanted. In Nicaragua, Ghana and India, our concept was met with great interest from the locals, and it was the intrinsic motivation of the local country managers to make a difference in their community that convinced us to implement the idea in these three countries. We also have requests from other countries such as Morocco, South Africa, Colombia, Sri Lanka and more, these requests mainly reach us through our social media channels. But at the moment, unfortunately, we don't have the resources to operate in all these countries. However, our long-term goal is to implement our concept in all communities where it is most needed!

What has Buy Food with Plastic achieved so far?

Since 2018, with the help of all our country managers and the teams on the ground, we have been able to provide more than 76,000 meals to those in need, collect more than 75,000 plastic bottles, create 16 jobs worldwide, build an upcycling factory in El Astillero, Nicaragua. Now we want to take the whole project to a new level! Are you with us?

How does Buy Food with Plastic differ from other organizations?

The concept is unique because it tackles several urgent problems at once. It creates space for awareness-raising, job opportunities, hope and environmental awareness. It enables people to tackle their problems themselves. Buy Food with Plastic is also simple and scalable.

The projects of the World Changing Campaign

With the World Changing Campaign we want to implement the following four projects in our countries of operation Nicaragua, Ghana, India & Switzerland.

We are an organization from Zurich and have been initiating community events worldwide since 2018, at which the local population can pay for a hot meal with plastic bottles. We then process the plastic bottles into new products to close the cycle.
